Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works losely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM works to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people.
The IOM Mission in Moldova opened in 2001, whereas Moldova officially became IOM Member State in 2003. The Mission’s main commitment follows the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. Being the leading international organization in migration sphere according to mutual agreements between IOM and the Government of the Republic of Moldova, IOM Moldova Mission acts with its partners in the international community to:
• Assist in meeting the growing operational challenges of migration management;
• Advance understanding of migration issues and its positive and negative consequences;
• Encourage social and economic development of the country through regular migration;
• Uphold the human dignity and well-being of migrants through protection of their rights.
One of the most important goals of IOM is offering to every Moldovan citizen, who has already decided to go abroad, latest and the most accurate information about legal migration. This includes exact and first-handed information about the possibilities of legal employment and study abroad, visa and other necessary documents, as well as awareness about risks and dangers of trafficking of human beings and other key important factors.
The growing out-migration of Moldovan citizens had led IOM, Mission to Moldova to launch in 2004 of the www.migratie.md project, aiming at offering comprehensive information and knowledge to migrants for the purpose of all the decisions taken by them to be fully well-weigh and conscious, from the point of view of legal, social and economic issues. Thus, the philosophy of www.migratie.md is that citizens should possess necessary information in order to take indeed an informed decision about migration.
The portal was updated and modernized in 2012 by the International Organization for Migration, Mission to Moldova within the “Supporting the implementation of the migration and development component of the EU-Moldova Mobility Partnership” project, implemented since 2010 till this day by the International Organization for Migration and funded by the European Union with a total amount of 1,999,734.77 EUR (30,822,578.58 MDL).
